THE PURIFICATION RITE OF MUNDUN
I, Young Toni, find the above article of particular interest. When people would go to be with Herakhan Babaji at his ashram in India, he would have them shave their heads--this is called mundun. I was told it was
a surrender of the ego to the divine, to a path committed to spiritual evolution and growth.I also recognized that when people would shave their heads, a lot of their suppressed emotional-mental information/patterning would come up fairy quickly for them to process.
I was always afraid that Babaji would ask this of me. Instead he had me go thru senility to lose my vanity and surrender my ego…it was an intense purification.
In Hindu tradition,
the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundan, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. It is also said that the shaving of the hair stimulates proper growth of the brain and nerves, and that the sikha, a tuft at the crown of the head, protects the memory.
Hindus practice a variety of rituals from birth to death. Collectively these are known as samskaras, meaning rites of purification, and are believed to make the body pure and fit for worship.
