Al Smith, 1873-1944, American politician and governor of New York State.
Soon after Al had been elected governor of New York State for the first time, he went to visit the prison of Sing Sing. He was shown the buildings and then asked to speak to the prisoners. It was the governor's first visit to a prison, so he didn't quite know how to begin his speech.
He started by saying, "Dear fellow citizens."
Then he remembered that when a man goes to Sing Sing, he is no longer a citizen. So he began again by saying, "Dear fellow prisoners."
That sounded even worse, but the worst of all was when he said,
"Well, anyhow, I'm glad to see so many of you here."
